About this Course

# Vata, Pitta & Kapha – The Three Doshas of Ayurveda According to Ayurveda, the human body and mind are influenced by three fundamental energies known as **Doshas — Vata, Pitta and Kapha**. These doshas are formed from the five basic elements of nature: **Space (Akasha), Air (Vayu), Fire (Agni), Water (Jala) and Earth (Prithvi)**. Every person has a unique combination of these three doshas. This individual constitution, known as **Prakriti**, influences a person's physical characteristics, digestion, energy, mental tendencies and overall well-being. Ayurveda focuses on maintaining a healthy balance between Vata, Pitta and Kapha through appropriate **food, lifestyle, yoga, meditation, daily routines and traditional wellness practices**. ## 🌬️ Vata Dosha **Elements:** Space + Air **Main qualities:** Light, dry, mobile, cold and subtle Vata is associated with **movement and communication** within the body. It is traditionally considered responsible for activities such as movement, breathing, circulation, nerve functions and elimination. When Vata is balanced, a person may experience good flexibility, creativity, enthusiasm and adaptability. ### Signs traditionally associated with Vata imbalance * Dryness of skin * Irregular digestion * Restlessness * Difficulty maintaining a regular routine * Feeling cold * Variable energy levels * Occasional sleep disturbances ### Supporting Vata balance A regular daily routine, adequate rest, warm nourishing food, gentle exercise, relaxation and practices that promote grounding may help support Vata balance. --- ## 🔥 Pitta Dosha **Elements:** Fire + Water **Main qualities:** Hot, sharp, light, intense and spreading Pitta is associated with **transformation and metabolism**. Ayurveda traditionally connects Pitta with digestion, metabolism, body temperature and various biochemical processes. When Pitta is balanced, it is associated with good focus, confidence, determination and efficient digestion. ### Signs traditionally associated with Pitta imbalance * Feeling excessive heat * Increased irritability * Acidic or uncomfortable digestion * Skin sensitivity * Excessive thirst * Difficulty relaxing ### Supporting Pitta balance Cooling and balanced lifestyle habits, regular meals, adequate hydration, relaxation, moderate activity and avoiding excessive heat may help support Pitta balance. --- ## 🌱 Kapha Dosha **Elements:** Earth + Water **Main qualities:** Heavy, stable, cool, slow, smooth and unctuous Kapha is associated with **structure, stability and lubrication**. Ayurveda traditionally connects Kapha with strength, physical stability, nourishment and resilience. When balanced, Kapha is associated with calmness, patience, steadiness and good physical endurance. ### Signs traditionally associated with Kapha imbalance * Feeling sluggish * Heaviness * Reduced motivation * Excessive sleepiness * Slow digestion * Feeling of congestion ### Supporting Kapha balance Regular physical activity, a stimulating daily routine, lighter balanced meals and avoiding prolonged inactivity may help support Kapha balance. --- ### ✨ Explore Ayurvedic Wellness Learn more about **Doshas, Prakriti, Dinacharya, Yoga, Acupressure and traditional wellness practices** through our educational resources. **Note:** Ayurvedic doshas are traditional concepts of Ayurveda and should not be considered a substitute for medical diagnosis or treatment.
